Taqueria La Dona.
As I entered the Taqueria La Dona, inside the BP Service Station at 12335 Arnold Mill Rd., in the same shopping center as the Crabapple Kroger, I saw that both the outside tables were filled with workers having a late lunch, as I was. It was well past “lunch hour”, but business was brisk…a good omen for a first timer.
There was a bit of a language barrier but Dona was friendly and accommodating, as was a customer, a young man who was waiting for his order. Having no particular favorites in Latino food, I asked him what he was having, and he said, “A carne asada torta” and he recommended it. I had never eaten one but it sounded good, so I ordered one. Dona recited the torta contents, braised beef tips, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, refried beans, and some kind of orange colored magic sauce. It was served on an oblong crusty white roll, much like a Cuban sandwich, except that the bread was a lot softer. And my torta was delicious!
The torta was lunch enough for me ordinarily, but I began to wonder about Dona’s tacos, so I went back in and got one…chicken in a soft corn shell. It was filled with solid small chunks of white meat chicken. It was not particularly zesty or spicy but seemed authentic; certainly different from the usual Americanized tacos.
The only tables at Taqueria La Dona are the ones I mentioned…outside, by the door, so I sat at one of them. Don’t go there looking for ambience….those tables are plain, and are only there to accommodate. But the ambience that impressed me was the steady flow of customers to the Taqueria. In fact, forget ambiance, and go there for a great torta!
Taqueria La Dona is open from 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. They are closed on Sundays.
